2022 Garden Plans
Written by: Kenzie
Some of you may know that I aspire to be an avid gardener someday. So far, however, I have dabbled and grown tired of it and tried again and killed plants and forgot about plants and generally just haven’t quite dedicated myself to it. So this year, I’m going to actually make a plan and attempt to stick to it.
If I have a plan, I think I’ll be a little more likely to stay on track. I’ve been reading The Cut Flower Garden to get myself inspired and it’s definitely doing the trick. (If you don’t follow @floretflower on Instagram, you are missing out on all the gorgeous and informational flower content for sure!) Since I’m currently living in an apartment and my parent’s house gets little to no sun in the backyard, my sister and my aunt are letting me use their yards! Or more specifically, two garden patches in their yards which I’m super grateful for! I know it would be easier for me to keep on top of things if it was in my own backyard right out the door, but someday I’ll be there.
I recently bought a lot of seeds (I have a problem with buying wayyyy too many seeds) and haven’t decided yet how to split them between the two plots I have access to. I also recently got a soil tester that measure the soil’s moisture level, Ph levels, and sun apparently but I’m not quite sure how it works, but I will soon learn! Once I figure it out, I’ll amend the soil accordingly. I didn’t do this last year in Callie’s garden and all that survived was the sunflowers and zinnias - which were still very pretty!
I plan on planting a mix of flowers and vegetables/fruits to see how they grow together and whatnot. And I want it to be pretty! Ultimately, I hope that gardening will teach me a lot about plants and dirt and all that cool stuff of course, but also teach me patience and help to ease my anxiety and get me outside more - which I definitely want.
So, my next steps are this:
Test the soil and amend accordingly
Develop an overall garden plan for the two plots
Decide what other plants I want to grow besides the seeds I already have
Plant all the things!
I have a bit of time before the last frost date in the area, but also not sure if I should start any seeds beforehand. I did this last year, and when I transplanted them outdoors, they all died soooooo…
I’m excited to learn and grow (lol literally) and see how many pretty things I can bring up from the dirt. I’ll leave you with some dreamy gardens to get you and myself inspired.
