Add These Books to Your Child's Library

I thought I would slip my teacher hat back on for a minute to share some books that I think should be in your child’s library! With everything that is going on right now I think it’s very important to have a wide range of books that are not only entertaining but also touch on the importance of diversity and inclusion. We all need to be represented in our own special way and what better way to do that than through books?! I read almost all of these to my kiddos last year and they loved them! Each picture is linked so feel free to click on any that you might want to order for your child or a teacher friend!

This book is a perfect reminder for any child who has ever felt different to be brave and embrace their uniqueness. The world will make space for you!
This book is perfect because it is inspiring and representative of woman and women of color. We want our kids to be able to see themselves in the stories, right?
Wonder is perfect for bigger kids because it gives them a reminder to think critically about the world and the choices they are making.
I love this book for a few different reasons but the main one is that it is important to include everyone no matter what “label” they might have.
This one touches on the universal themes of friendship, empathy and kindness. Includes mindfulness and self-compassion activities. I haven’t read this one to my kids yet but I plan on it in the fall!
The Snowy Day is the first full color picture book to feature a small black hero. My kids loved this book and enjoyed following this child as they experienced snow for the very first time.
This book is a perfect conversational tool for parents, teachers, caretakers, and anyone looking to help Brown children understand the greatness that can be achieved in every shade of Brown.
In this imaginative, evocative story, a girl named Keyana discovers the beauty and magic of her special hair, encouraging black children to be proud of their heritage and enhancing self-confidence.
I just ordered this book! I can’t wait to read it next year and talk about the message behind it. It is all about embracing the things that bring us together as humans! Plus, who doesn’t love Kristen Bell?!

The message in this story is to love your self, respect and be kind to others!
I read this to my students at the very beginning of the year to remind them that while they may not be able to do something right now, that doesn’t mean they won’t ever be able to!
The Word Collector is a good reminder of how far being kind goes.
