Quick and Easy Afternoon Craft
Written by: Kenzie
So I saw this thing on TikTok - I know what you’re thinking but really I saw it on Pinterest and it was just from TikTok so that gives it a little merit, right? - and I’ve done it twice now and I just think it’s too fun not to share! It’s a super simple painting technique that I think anyone can do and the results are so darn cute!
When it comes to crafts, I’m kinda picky on what I choose to attempt. For starters, I’m no good at painting. I always wanted to be a person that paints and I have tried throughout my years, but they never turn out anything like I had planned and are typically pretty ugly. However, this one seemed simple enough and I really like the way it turned out!
Before I jump into some super easy-to-follow instructions, here’s three reasons this is a great craft:
It doesn’t take long. I completely finished this project in under an hour and a half and most of that was dry time.
It’s easy. For me, this is a great way to wind down and kind of relax. The steps are simple and it’s very much adaptable to fit whatever look you’re going for.
It’s cheap. I already had everything I needed at my house so for me, it was actually free. If you do need to buy supplies, though, it should cost more than $25 I’d say and that’s pushing it.
So, without further ado, here’s how to make a cute and original piece of art to use as decor, give as a gift, or just because!
Supplies you will need:
Assorted paints in whatever colors you choose
A canvas or painting surface
Paintbrushes
Paint marker (one or two colors, I like plain white and maybe a metallic one)
That’s it! Easy, right? So I already had a canvas sitting around (I just keep some on hand for, you know, reasons) but you could use art paper or a block of wood or whatever really. I chose a conglomeration of pink/red tones for the flowers plus some green for the leaves. I ended up mixing a lot of my colors together so that they weren’t so vastly different. Plus, it makes me feel like a real painter that way.
I painted the canvas with a subtle incandescent type paint, but this step isn’t necessary if you just want a plain white background. Then, I just painted a lot of blobs. It was looking rather disheartening at first, but when you add the paint pen to it, it really comes together! Stick to basic flower shapes like daisies and roses.
Next, paint the leaves in to help fill in space and make the blobs look more like flowers. I also ended up adding gold polka dots all around because I like polka dots and wanted the canvas to be more full.
Once all that dries completely, it’s time for the fun part! Get you paint pen(s) and use it to create the petals in the flowers and the detail lines of the leaves. This can be as abstract as you want, really, because as bad as I am at painting, I’m actually worse at drawing so I was scared to do this part but it’s really easy once you get the basic shape down! Start with an outline and the middle part of the flower and then just add lines to make it look more like a flower. That’s kind of vague, but it makes sense when you’re doing it, promise.
And viola! A quick and east afternoon craft for any day of the week!
